It was announced alongside Sonic Forces and they released within a few months of each other back in 2017. Sonic Mania was true to the origins of Sonic, being a 2D side-scrolling platform that upped the difficulty severely. Players didn’t mind too much though as it was one of the best Sonic games ever and praised as a return to the series roots. Unfortunately though, a sequel is very unlikely to materialise as Christian Whitehead and the rest of the team have since moved on.
- All totally optional of course, because that’s Sonic CD. It’s a game for people who aren’t in a hurry, which is a little antithetical to the Sonic ethos…
- This is the fourth entry in the Sega All-Stars series, which puts various Sega characters together.
- Along with great music and gameplay, Sonic 2 also introduced Sonic’s best pal, Miles “Tails” Prower, the two-tailed fox who could fly around.

This is also explained in the Japanese strategy guide, which states that after imprisoning him, GUN forced Gerald to keep working on Project Shadow under their supervision. So that was when he manipulated Shadow’s memories as a way of “reprogramming” him to carry on his plan without the higher-ups noticing. Presumably, they eventually caught on that he had a secret agenda, which was what prompted them to sentence him to death row and shut down the project for good. Regardless of what form Sonic takes, you’ll find a bevy of collectible content scattered throughout each level, and longtime fans of the series will notice more than a few familiar faces during their journey. Neither section of the game is perfect, but it’s a fun homage to the Blue Blur’s past while still retaining some of its modern conveniences. A lot of Sonic Frontiers is still a mess, actually, and Sonic himself still doesn’t feel great. Those two things alone will keep a lot of players away, and I can’t blame them.
Another option is to include the best segments as cyberspace levels in the next game, including some Sonic Unleashed daylight segments.
